HOW TO TREAT ADULT ACNE

If you think acne is just a teenage problem, think again.  Lots of adults in their 30s, 40s and beyond are dealing with acne. Women tend to get adult acne more often than men do.   Most adult acne occurs cheeks, chin and the jaw – so there is no hiding the problem.

So what might be causing this rise in adult acne?

  • Increased Stress levels
  • Hormonal changes (pregnancy or menopause)
  • Diet
  • Pollution
  • Medications
  • Vitamin D deficiency
  • Products and Cosmetics

What exactly is acne?

It is the disorder of keratinization, which is the faulty development of the cells lining the sebaceous glands.  The cell walls are sticky, binding together and plugging the gland rather than exfoliating themselves onto your skin’s surface.  With acneic skin, sebaceous glands continue to secrete oil (sebum), which clog pores even further.  Acne causing bacteria which live on the skin flourishes in this environment, causing irritation, inflammation and acne eruptions. This leads to an acne cycle and scarring.

What causes the acne cycle?

Sebaceous glands that produce too much oil and the production of too many skin cells, create oil and skin plugs which then trigger the acne cycle.  To learn more about the acne cycle click here.
