We all know what blackheads look like – a small, slightly raised black bump that appear on the skin surface.  They look like blocked pores right, but they are in fact clogged hair follicles.  Either way they are unsightly and can lead to other skin concerns like breakouts and enlarged pores.  The earlier you begin to treat blackheads the better for your skin.

Can blackheads be treated?

Yes.  With both Bloom ‘specialised skin treatments’ and targeted at home treatment products.

Where do you get blackheads?

What is a blackhead?

Blackheads form when a plug develops in the opening of the hair follicles.  Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil.  This oil is called sebum and it helps keep your skin soft.  When dead skin and oil collect in the hair follicle it can produce a bump, called a comedo.  When the bump stays closed it is called a whitehead.  When the skin over the bump opens, exposure to the air causes discolouration – causing it to look black and a blackhead forms.  Click here to learn more.

What causes blackheads?

Some factors can increase the chance of developing blackheads.

  • Blackheads are most common during puberty, when the change in hormone levels triggers a spike in sebum production. However, they can appear at any age.
  • Overproduction of skin cells by the body can cause blackheads.
  • The blocking or covering of pores by cosmetics and clothing
  • Heavy sweating
  • Shaving and other activities that open the hair follicles
  • High humidity and grease in the immediate environment
  • Genetics
