Melasma

Skin Pigmentation and Sun Damage: What causes it and what should you do about it?

Melasma is a form of skin pigmentation that is common in pregnant women, caused by fluctuating hormones and/or sun exposure. Melasma can present as blotchy, darkened skin and is more common in women with darker complexions. Skin pigmentation often self-corrects after having a baby, but if it doesn’t, skin treatment is available.

Which laser treatment is best for Melasma?  Low-fluence (heat) Q-switched Nd-YAG laser is the best option for individuals with melasma.

Alma’s award-winning ClearLift applicator is the most comprehensive Q-Switched ND:YAG treatment solution available today.

ClearLift delivers intense nanosecond pulses to the target area resulting in a photo acoustic effect.  This mechanical Q switch action is highly effective in removing tattoos, melasma and hyperpigmentation.

What to expect during the treatment

Most patients feel a rubber band snapping sensation against the skin as the pulses of energy are delivered through the hand-piece by our therapist. The Alma Harmony XL Pro laser machine has a cooling tip which the therapist will use to protect and soothe the treated areas so you feel no discomfort and have an improved treatment experience.

Post-treatment

This treatment may leave you a little flushed afterwards, but this will fade within a few hours and makeup can be applied directly after treatment. We will apply sunscreen at the end of the treatment to protect your skin afterwards. How many treatments will you need will depend on the nature of the melasma, and we recommend spacing treatments four weeks apart.
