What causes Acne, Breakouts and Blackheads?
Patients effected by acne have sebaceous glands that produce too much oil and too many skin cells, creating oil and skin plugs which then trigger the acne cycle. Acne causing bacteria which live on the skin flourishes in this environment, causing irritation, inflammation and acne eruptions. This leads to an acne cycle and scarring.
Blackheads form when a plug develops in the opening of the hair follicles. Each follicle contains one hair and a sebaceous gland that produces oil. This oil is called sebum and it helps keep your skin soft. When dead skin and oil collect in the hair follicle it can produce a bump, called a comedo. When the bump stays closed it is called a whitehead. When the skin over the bump opens, exposure to the air causes discolouration – causing it to look black and a blackhead form.
The earlier you begin to treat acne, breakouts and blackheads the sooner your skin can heal and reduce scarring, enlarged pores and skin discolouration.
